This weekend, we’re going to do our very best to take your mind off the rain, wind and tube strikes. We’re going to be opening two fresh, bright wines to make everyone (we hope) feel a bit more springlike, while still giving joy and comfort on cold, dark days.
We’re opening the new vintage of a shop mainstay, the AA Badenhorst Family Wines Secateurs Chenin Blanc. Winemaker Adi Badenhorst spent nine years making wine at Rustenberg in Stellenbosch before teaming up with his cousin Hein to make wine in Swartland – where some of the most interesting South African wines are now being made. They farm “as biologically as possible”, though some of the grapes for the Secateurs – the entry level wine – come from a neighbouring farm.
The Château Haut-Rigaleau Bordeaux Superieur is an organic wine from the Entre Deux Mers region of Bordeaux, a 40 minute drive south east from St. Emilion. It’s a good example of how wine from this region doesn’t have to fancy, complicated or high-priced. The Verhaeghe family – who also make a St. Emilion Grand Cru – have been making wine for two hundred years, from various vineyards across the region, where they practice biodiversity.
Secateurs Chenin Blanc 2013 (South Africa £11.50)
Soft apples & lemon peel, with a light honey texture from several months maturation on the lees (post-fermentation yeast cells). Intense but fresh & dangerously drinkable! This wine was recently recommended on BBC Two’s Food & Drink programme as a great match for a creamy fish pie.
Chateau Haut-Rigaleau Cuvee Tradition 2009 (France £12.99)
An unoaked, uncomplicated blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Crunchy black fruits with hints of graphite and tobacco.
