Wines On Taste This Weekend: Friday 30th + Saturday 31st August

This weekend we’re off for a taste of North-West Italy – but without breaking the bank or forcing you to fly Easyjet.

First up is our “baby Barolo” (it’s made from the same Nebbiolo grape but does not carry quite as hefty a price tag). Alongside this we’re opening another Italian classic white – a Gavi made from the Cortese grape.

Both are naturally a good match for a whole range of Italian food including one of our favourite cheeses – the La Tur – that comes from the same region. The last days of August may feel they mark the end of the summer, yet here’s hoping that we all keep smiling well into September.

WWAD 30&31-08-13 large

G.D. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo 2010 (£21.99)
Ruby red and fuller-bodied. Fresh red fruits, raw almonds and a savoury note of dried herbs. Well structured tannins give a long lasting, elegant finish. Piedmont has a number of really interesting grapes – you may remember that we opened the brambly Dolcetto d’Alba from the same producer a few weeks ago.

Sarotto Bric Sassi Gavi di Gavi 2012 (£12.00)
Named after the place where it is grown, with ‘Bric’ meaning the top of the hillside and ‘Sassi’ referring to the white flinty stones in the vineyard. As a good Gavi should be, this is juicy and round. White peaches and golden apples, ending with a crisp finish that carries through those flinty mineral notes.

Bottles will be open from 6-8pm on Friday and from 2-6pm on Saturday and as ever with our in-store tastings, it’s completely free and there’s no obligation to buy.

Also this is the last chance to save a bit with our 10 for 10 offer, where if you spend £10+ on a bottle of wine then you get 10% off a second, as it will finish at close of play on Saturday (8.30pm).
